And now I welcome back BookGraf after a hiatus during which I learned embroidery (I’m bad at it), freelanced for a couple of nonprofits, watched The Best Baby Ever learn to walk, lost my last remaining grandparent, and generally failed to blog or perform a remotely sufficient number of housekeeping acts despite the tragically, infuriatingly, foot-stompingly, whine-inducingly dreadful weather keeping us all indoors too much. Happy to kick off the new year (however tardily) with what is sure to be a great read.
As long as we’re discussing cancer (and what an asshole it is), I thought that The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks would be an awesome addition to the BookGraf shelf. By all reports, it’s a pretty remarkable story. As I work on assorted global health projects, and as non-communicable disease (including cancer) takes a front seat on the health issues bus this year (see what I’m working on at Arogya World), this seemed like a fine time to read what is – apparently – an excellent book.
- Let author Rebecca Skloot tell you all about it here.
- And here’s The New York Times review.
- And here is a bunch of stuff, including an excerpt from NPR.

As always, any purchases through links on this site will generate a small donation to the American Cancer Society (via my Cancer is an Asshole campaign). Which may be especially appropriate with this selection.
Let’s read this by, oh, mid-March? I know this is just in advance of the paperback coming out, but I just couldn’t wait. Too excited.
