Cancer is an Asshole: $24.70 and a bonus petition

This summer was not a dull one – full of exciting earthquakes, delightful hurricanes, and more work than time. The house could use a good cleaning, as could my inbox. And I’m still tickled every time that I see that Amazon payment come in, and I pop on over to Cancer.org and make good on my promise to you fine people. For the record, I made the donation promptly, am just posting about it now.

In my day job, I work for a small nonprofit called Arogya World, which works to fight non-communicable diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart and lung disease. These diseases kill 36 million people each year, and the number of people afflicted is growing. The United Nations is so concerned that they’re hosting a high-level meeting about these diseases, and Arogya World has banded together with a bunch of other fine organizations to start a petition demanding that the leaders attending the meeting make real, tangible commitments to helping people live longer, healthier lives. Commitments like educating people on healthy living and disease prevention, promoting sports and physical activity, taxing tobacco and alcohol products and reducing the marketing of junk food to children. Without specific goals, targets and accountability, their point is, nothing will actually be done, and more and more people will die each year.

If you have a moment, I invite you to sign the Women for a Healthy Future petition and share it with a couple of your friends.

And with that, I proudly present this month’s accounts:

$24.70 from Amazon

$24.70 to the ACS

Thank you so much for making this possible.

You too can tell cancer where to stick it!

You can catch up with all of our cancer-punching shenanigans on the Cancer is an Asshole project page.
